UNN SUG LEADERS REJECT STUDENTS' PROPOSED PROTEST

UNN SUG Excludes Self from Planned Protest Over Proposed School Fees Increment

The Students’ Union Government (SUG), University of Nigeria has formally distanced itself from any planned protest against the University Management over the proposed increment in school fees, urging students to remain calm as negotiations with the university management continue.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the SUG Executive Council, the student leadership acknowledged the growing tension among students following reports of a proposed hike in school fees.

The union admitted that its earlier silence had raised concerns but clarified that it had been engaged in behind-the-scenes consultations with relevant stakeholders to address the issue.

While appreciating the willingness of students, opinion leaders, and external bodies to intervene, either through protests or other actions, the SUG appealed for the suspension of all protest plans.

It warned that uncoordinated actions could undermine the progress already made through dialogue.

“The SUG is not party to any proposed protest,” the statement stressed, adding that the union believes peaceful dialogue remains the most effective approach to resolving the matter.

It further cautioned that any individual or group leading a protest without allowing the SUG to conclude its engagement with management could face legal consequences.

Reassuring students, the union stated that the university management has listened to students’ concerns and is actively engaging with the SUG to reach a mutually beneficial resolution.

The leadership therefore called for calm across the campuses as talks continued.

The statement  reaffirmed  the SUG’s commitment to protecting students’ interests through constructive engagement rather than confrontation.
